Users upload individual stem parts?
I'd like to suggest the following:
The possibilities for users to upload individual song parts (instrument play-a-longs). With the idea / hope that eventually you would have a complete version of the song without using the original audio. So then users can mute individual parts for play-a-long practice.
Obviously you would have some people uploading really bad sounding tracks, but here's the clever part: you let users vote on the best versions.
What would then happen would be that, for example, you'd have a drummer who's a real Queen (the band) freak. So he (or she) would take pride in uploading the drum parts for many Queen songs, with good audio quality, and having his versions chosen as the best.
Or you might have producers take the trouble of re-creating a complete song, just because they really like it, as a sort of tribute and technical practice.
It's a little bit like how you have a lot of people doing photo-realistic pencil drawings these days. It's not really art (in my opinion) but shows extreme technical skill, which people rightly take pride in.

Sorry, thinking about it some more, what might also happen is regular contributors might decide to organize together to tackle a song en masse.
So, a drummer, bassist, guitarist, keyboard player, even percussionist or string arranger might decide together that they're going to do Michael Jackson's "Rock With You". For really good players it's only an hours work or less to work out the part and record it.
