How can I switch off lyric subtitles on videos?

Over the past couple of weeks I've noticed that every video has subtitles/lyrics along the bottom.  They're too small to read and I speak English anyway, so they serve no purpose.  They never used to be there, so how can I switch them off?  I'm talking about subtitles in the YouTube window rather than those that appear under the chords.
